The Riverside Church of the City of New York, formerly the Park Avenue Baptist Church, opened for worship in October, 1930, and dedicated in February, 1931. The edifice occupies a commanding site on Riverside Drive at 122nd Street, almost opposite Grant's Tomb. The Cathedral of Chartres (A. D. 1194-1260) was the inspiration for the French-Gothic architecture of the building. The auditorium accommodates 2500 people. The Tower of the church houses the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Carillon consisting of seventy-two bells.
